Of all the Europeans, Germans especially came to appreciate American Indian culture through one of their most popular authors Karl May. Karl May’s novels are the adventures of the noble Apache warrior and his white companion Old Shatterhand.
Karl May’s wife Klara through her 1920’s travels in the American Southwest came to appreciate the artistry of creating from homespun sheep wool the beautiful Indian blankets, rugs and tapestries many of which she purchased for her own collection.
While handspun wool is still used today, the trend is towards weavings using commercial wool.
NavajoCrafts makes it possible to purchase original fine tapestries, rugs and blankets without having to visit a traditional Indian Trading Post.
While Navajo tapestries from well known weavers are very expensive our NavajoCrafts associates live on the reservation, speak the language, search the reservation for the weavings and crafts of local undiscovered artists and offer these artistic creations at affordable prices.
